On September 14, 2020 at 11.00 a.m. (Moscow time) Oksana Guzenko, the head of Arkhangelsk NGO “Most” (“Bridge”) will speak about her work with people with mental health problems in the Arkhangelsk region.

Arkhangelsk non-governmental organization supporting people with mental health conditions “Most” has been in operation for 20 years. Its goal is to help people with mental health conditions to adapt to regular life. Habilitation includes teaching basic skills (cooking meals, washing and ironing, paying utilities and keeping the budget), communication training sessions, psychological support, sports and crafts classes, making and sale of souvenir products. NGO “Most” also helps with employment and self-employment of its clients.

The President of the organization, Oksana Guzenko, says:

“A person is diagnosed with schizophrenia. He /she can do nothing about it. He /she has to live with it. But nobody tells how. A person comes home from hospital. The utilities bills are not paid, documents are lost, no work, no money. He/she stays at home within four walls. He/she was given food and drinks in hospital. And now he/she needs something to eat, needs to do shopping. It means he/she needs money. But there is no money. They can get disability payments. But in order to get them they need documents and need to leave home.

This leads to the situation when young people can commit socially dangerous acts. When you are hungry you can suffer it for a day or two. But what’s next?..Or young people are released from hospital, they are given a prescription but do not take the medicine. They get back to hospital again. And they continue like that: back home from hospital then back to hospital again. And they get back to hospital because of unsolved social problems. But we can help to solve them”.

All these skills seem very simple to us but some people with mental health conditions cannot even use a microwave. NGO “Most” solves a social problem by providing household and psychological support to these people.

Oksana Guzenko has been the head of NGO “Most” supporting people with mental health conditions since 2012.
